Vampire Weekend

I'd like to apologize in advance if somewhere towards the end of this entry things stop making sense. Wednesday are my long days and I'm feeling the affects and so coherance isn't exactly the foremost thing in my mind. Getting my thoughts out are. So here they are.
As you can tell by the title, this entry is on a band called Vampire Weekend. I'm not easily impressed and if a band or singer is hyped to the extreme, especially in the blogosphere, chances are I'll be even less impressed if you're not extraordinarily talented. As an example; Kate Nash has been hyped by various media outlets since she first posted a song on MySpace. Everyone loves and having, until about a week, only heard snippets of her songs, I couldn't see what all the fuss was about. Then I got the chance to listen to her entire album, and I got it. The point though is, if you don't have a song that can immediatly grab me, even and semi-conscious state, there's no hope for you in my opinion.
So, Vampire Weekend. Since almost a year ago people have been going ga-ga over this group from Columbia (don't get me started on the whole Ivy League bullshit) and since I mainly listen to LPs and not internet downloads of demos, I didn't understand what all the fuss was about. In fact I kind of ignored everyone's drooling because there have been a lot of one hit wonders who got fabulous reviews on the outset. Anyway, Vampire Weekend's debut album was released yesterday and, in a semi-conscious state, I gave the album a spin. My immediate thought was that Paul Simon should sue the lead singer for copyright infringement because the two sound so much a like. My next thought was that Paul Simon should sue the whole band for copyright infringement because the band seemed to have based their entire album on his 1973 album There Goes Rhymin'Simon (which I had to listen to extensively when I was a child). This isn't to say they aren't good. They're a good solid band. All I'm saying is that the mass amounts of praise that this band has garnered over the past year isn't entirely deserved. Over at Good Weather for Air Strikes, writer Derek has already basically declared it the album of 2008. The only review of the album that seems at all realistic (at least in my little world of online criticism) is the AV Club who gave the album a B-. Everyone else seems to think that this album is the best thing since sliced bread, which, in my opinion, just isn't true. A good debut does not mean genius and all of these brilliant reviews are just setting the band up for failure when they get around to their sophomore album.
To sum up: Vampire Weekend is a fairly good album that owes a hell of a lot to Paul Simon and people need to calm down about this band.

Insane in the Membrane (Insane in the Brain!)

I think I've officially lost my mind. First off I'm going bonkers over a study abroad booklet I got today and secondly I volunteered to be the radio station's assistant librarian. Yes, I know, absolutely insane, nonetheless my hand shot up when they asked and now I'm assistant librarian. On the plus side, I don't have English tomorrow!! So yay. Also my show went very well tonight and my class were very spiff. All in all a good day for Nore. Quite a good day.

On A Lighter Note

So last night (very early this morning) was a bit of a downer and since I'm bored and trying to find ways to kill time, here some pictures that I find humorous and/or light hearted. Enjoy!

(Acquired from a DW LJ community, but for the life of me, I can't remember which one, sadly. The quote is from Monty Python's Holy Grail)

(As with the above, same nameless community. Also if you don't get the quote, you're totally lame and need to see The Princess Bride now)

(Discworld characters depicted as mice. Clockwise from the top left; Rincewind, Granny Weatherwax, Nanny Ogg, Sam Vimes, Havelock Vetinari, aand Great A'tuin. The bottom two are Igor and C.M.O.T Dibbler. Drawn by Tanken over at DeviantArt)

(As above, same artist and all that. Clockwise from top left; Moist von Lipwig, Mr. Pump, the Librarian, the Bursar, Archchancellor Ridcully, and Miss Dearheart)

That's it. Somebody remind me to never not take my meds because the after affects are a bitch.

Late Night Philosopher

People can be incredibly cruel. I wouldn't know this from first had experience mind you, but I see it all the time. Or more accurately I hear about it all the time. People doing things that are cruel and selfish, acts that hurt the people around them more than they could ever guess. People hurt people constantly, emotionally and physically. And the beauty in all of it, is that I rarely deal with it first hand. Sure people annoy me and do things that can hurt, but nothing as cruel as what happened tonight. I've never been lied to my face or excluded when I wanted to be included. As much as I'm currently living the anti-social life, it isn't as if I'm completely alone. I interact, much like I did in 10th grade with the people around me to the extent that I want to, and really that's all that matters to me. Nonetheless, people are still incredibly cruel, but only to the people they care about most. Maybe that's why I never get myself involved too deeply in other people. A sly way of protecting myself from love's cruelty.
They only reason I'm writing this is because I was listening to Keane's cover of "Under Pressure" and the last verse got to me again. But for me, tonight was good. I watched a movie with acquaintances and wasn't alone. As much as I enjoy being alone, I don't like spending all my time alone, so tonight was good, in a bitter-sweet way. Because, you see, people are cruel.
On a happier note, I've figured out the people I get along best with are either music geeks or ADHD/ADD. Just shows that the socially awkward always get along best with the socially awkward.

This Is My Saturday

I'm a horrible person. Mostly because I'm addicted to sales and cheap prices. I'm slowly becoming a Sudman (my mom's mom's side of the family.) Pretty soon I'll be getting excited over cheap gas prices and saving ten cents on groceries. Mostly I'm a horrible person because I love shopping even though I know I don't need most of the things I buy. Except of course for the import Kinks: The Ultimate Collection which I totally needed if only for the fact that it has both "Victoria" and all my other favourites. And Old Navy was having a sale, two shirts for 15 bucks! That's definitely a steal. Oh I'm so sad.
So that's it. More "Gilmore Girls" to be watched.

16.1.08

Despite Better Judgement...

  • I like Kate Nash's album. I've given it a spin and well...the accent is a little annoying, but well worth the lyrics. The praise is mostly justified.
  • I'm staying up past 10pm. I'm so completely wiped it's not even funny. The fact that I'm making coherent sentences is a miracle.
  • I'm getting a second job in the music department. Which means I'm adding more things to my already busy schedule. Yay me.

14.1.08

First Day Back

Yes, I'm updating for the third day in a row. I know, the world has ended.
So today was the first day of classes for the semester and things have already gotten exciting. My theory prof. (aka head of the music department) can be identified by the loud thumping of his cowboy boots which I find highly amusing. Nonetheless I think that Prof. Long will definitely be different from Prof. Naylor, but not for the worst. Except for the fact that he's kind of a know-it-all. Which might prove annoying. On the other hand my history prof. is the second biggest geek I've met on this campus and I'm already mucho excited about the class. Finally, my math teacher should be good and the class seems like it will be fairly easy. So, all in all, a good day.
I need to stop being like my dad. I was offered another student job in the music department and I've been acting like it's some burden to be appreciated by my teachers. I definitely need to find a happy median between self deprecation and gloating. Ah well, I'll figure it out. I'm cool like that yo.
Brit Award noms were announced today. I'm amazingly unexcited about the whole endeveour despite the fact that KC are nominated for three awards. I only want them to win one though, because Muse is better live and "Valerie" (Mark Ronson version) is a much better song than "Ruby." So basically I want them to win for best band. Let's all cross our fingers and watch it not happen.
So that's it. I've got reading and math to do, so I'll be off. (To definitely not do either of those things.)

13.1.08

Back

Well I'm back. It's not the living hell I imagined it to be, but the semester is young and Allison is hoping to transfer, so it might just become a living hell. I got my books without too much fuss which was really nice because I wasn't really in the mood for drama. It's too soon for drama.
So classes start tomorrow and I can feel the jitters racing through my veins as we speak. Actually that might be the caffeine, but same diff. I also feel the need to sing coursing through my veins, but much like the jitters, there's nothing I can do about it. At least not without annoying the shit out of my roommates first day back, which would bad.
I some how managed to bring back more movies than I went home with, but if things go the way I think they're going to this semester it won't really matter. I'll just have a bunch of films sitting on my shelf gathering dust. On other shelf related news I somehow managed to fit all of my textbooks along with all the books I brought back with me. Granted three of them were library books and will be returned tomorrow. Nonetheless I'm still impressed.
So now that I've filled up a page, ta-ra.

Over the Hill and Through the Woods...

In accordance with the principal that Nore must take twice as long to do any given task because she must putter around doing jack shit for at least half of the day, I come bearing articles from the past few days. Most are rather hilarious and, as always, most have to do with music. One has to do with poodles.
A long while ago, while watching the tube, I heard "Conquest" for the first time. Sometime before then I had actually heard the song during a break between sets at the Muse concert, but I didn't really get that they were the same song. You see the one used in the eBay commercial was recorded by Patti Page who pioneered multi-track recording in popular music. The version I had heard at the Muse concert was a deftly done cover by the White Stripes. Well, it seems that Mr. White had a "conversation" with Ms. Page, which I think is quite cool. Anyway, I just thought this brought a nice conclusion to what I had written about sometime ago in my seminar blog, but since I don't write in that anymore, I figured I'd post the article here.
Cheese. We all know it's my favourite noun and certainly one of my favourite foods, but what place does it hold in the music world? Well, as I pointed out many years ago, Alex James, former Blur bassist, his a cheese maker. Recently he gave some to British rapper Dizzee Rascal. That's really all you have to know. Actually reading the article is pointless because trying to decipher what Dizzee is saying is quite hard and who cares really. The point is cheese.
My sister is obsessed with "Flight of the Conchords" kind of like I'm obsessed with that Yorkshire band. So, when I saw an article where the actor who plays the Conchords manager dispenses advice to two people I really dislike and one poor soul who needs to find her way, I couldn't resist. It's really funny and kind of almost not really true and good advice. So go on, read Murray's advice.
Well now that we're done with NME, let's watch some poodles be absolutely awesome.
Aaaah, poodles. Speaking of poodles, the Cribs are thinking of adding a fourth member to their trio. To be perfectly honest, I can't see it and of the suggestions put forth by Fake DIY, I can only hope it's either Kate Nash or Robochrist (whoever the hell that is.) Anyway, just something to think on.
So I head back to school tomorrow which I'm dreading. I don't want to deal with certain people and...well that's it really. Otherwise I'm not really dreading it. I don't have my books which makes me quite annoyed since I ordered them on Monday, but I'll figure all that out tomorrow. In other Nore news, I've taken to flicking off my calender when I feel like. It's semi-cathartic since it means I get to flick off the Gallagher brothers whenever I like. Also, I've watched so much NMTB that I don't think I can watch anymore. :rolls eyes: Yeah right. More Buzzcocks!

Lyric Post v.4.2

This is what happens when I procrastinate but have nothing to do whilst procrastinating. A whole shit load of random ass lyrics. Have fun.

Goodbye Stranger, Supertramp

It was an early morning yesterday
I was up before the dawn
And I really have enjoyed my stay
But I must be moving on

Like a king without a castle
Like a queen without a throne
I'm an early morning lover
And I must be moving on

Now I believe in what you say
Is the undisputed truth
But I have to have things my own way
To keep me in my youth

Like a ship without an anchor
Like a slave without a chain
Just the thought of those sweet ladies
Sends a shiver through my veins

And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

(Goodbye stranger it's been nice)
(Hope you find your paradise)
(Tried to see your point of view)
(Hope your dreams will all come true)
(Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane)
(Will we ever meet again)
(Feel no sorrow, feel no shame)
(Come tomorrow, feel no pain)

Sweet devotion, (Goodbye Mary)
it's not for me (Goodbye Jane)
Just give me motion, (Will we ever)
and set me free (meet again)

Like an ocean, (Feel no sorrow)
far away (feel no shame)
It's the life i've chosen (Come tomorrow)
every day (feel no pain)

So Goodbye Mary, (Goodbye Mary)
Goodbye Jane (Goodbye Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
meet again (meet again)

Now some they do and some they don't
And some you just can't tell
And some they will and some they won't
With some it's just as well

You can laugh at my behavior
That'll never bother me
Say the devil is my savior
But I don't pay no heed

And I will go on shining
Shining like brand new
I'll never look behind me
My troubles will be few

(Goodbye stranger it's been nice)
(Hope you find your paradise)
(Tried to see your point of view)
(Hope your dreams will all come true)
(Goodbye Mary, Goodbye Jane)
(Will we ever meet again)
(Feel no sorrow, feel no shame)
(Come tomorrow, feel no pain)

Sweet devotion, (Goodbye Mary)
it's not for me (Goodbye Jane)
Just give me motion, (Will we ever)
And set me free (meet again)
Like an ocean, (Feel no sorrow)
Far away (feel no shame)
It's the life I've chosen, (Come tomorrow)
Every day (feel no pain)

Now I'm leaving, (Goodbye Mary)
Got to go, (Goodbye Jane)
Hit the road (Will we ever)
I'll say it once again, (meet again)
oh yes I'm leaving (Feel no sorrow)
Got to go, (feel no shame)
Got to go. (come tomorrow)
I'm sorry I must dash (feel no pain)
But Goodbye Mary, (Goodbye Mary)
Goodbye Jane (Goodbye Jane)
Will we ever (Will we ever)
Meet again (meet again)

Oh I'm leavin'
I've got to go

All My Friends, LCD Soundsystem

That's how it starts.
We go back to your house.
We check the charts,
And start to figure it out.

And if it's crowded, all the better,
because we know we're gonna be up late.
But if you're worried about the weather
then you picked the wrong place to stay.
That's how it starts.

And so it starts.
You switch the engine on.
We set controls for the heart of the sun,
one of the ways we show our age.

And if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up, if the sun comes up
and I still don't wanna stagger home.
Then it's the memory of our betters
that are keeping us on our feet.

You spent the first five years trying to get with the plan,
and the next five years trying to be with your friends again.

You're talking 45 turns just as fast as you can,
yeah, I know it gets tired, but it's better when we pretend.

It comes apart,
the way it does in bad films.
Except in parts,
when the moral kicks in.

Though when we're running out of the drugs
and the conversation's winding away.
I wouldn't trade one stupid decision
for another five years of lies.

You drop the first ten years just as fast as you can,
and the next ten people who are trying to be polite.
When you're blowing eighty-five days in the middle of France,
Yeah, I know it gets tired only where are your friends tonight?

And to tell the truth.
Oh, this could be the last time.
So here we go,
like a sail's force into the night

And if I made a fool, if I made a fool, if I made a fool
on the road, there's always this.
And if I'm sewn into submission,
I can still come home to this.

And with a face like a dad and a laughable stand,
you can sleep on the plane or review what you said.
When you're drunk and the kids leave impossible tasks
you think over and over, "hey, I'm finally dead."

Oh, if the trip and the plan come apart in your hand,
you look contorted on yourself your ridiculous prop.
You forgot what you meant when you read what you said,
and you always knew you were tired, but then,
where are your friends tonight?

Where are your friends tonight?
Where are your friends tonight?

If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight,
If I could see all my friends tonight

Victoria, The Kinks

Long ago life was clean
Sex was bad and obscene
And the rich were so mean
Stately homes for the Lords
Croquet lawns, village greens
Victoria was my queen
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

I was born, lucky me
In a land that I love
Though I am poor, I am free
When I grow I shall fight
For this land I shall die
Let her sun never set
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, toria

Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Land of hope and gloria
Land of my Victoria
Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria

Canada to India
Australia to Cornwall
Singapore to Hong Kong
From the West to the East
From the rich to the poor
Victoria loved them all
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria, 'toria
Victoria, Victoria, Victoria

If This Is It, Huey Lewis and the News

I've been phoning at night and morning
I heard you say "tell him I'm not home"
Now you're confessing, But I'm still guessing
I've been your fool for so so long
Girl don't lie, just to save my feelings
Girl don't cry, and tell me nothing's wrong
Girl don't try to make up phony reasons
I'd rather leave than never believe

If this is it
Please let me know
If this ain't love you'd better let me go
If this is it
I want to know the row
If this ain't love baby, just say so

You've been thinking
And I've been drinking
We both know that it's just not right
Now you're pretending
That it's not ending
You'll say anything to avoid a fight
Girl don't lie, and tell me that you need me
Girl don't cry, and tell me nothing's wrong
I'll be alright, one way or another
So let me go, or make we want to stay

If this is it
Please let me know
If this ain't love you'd better let me go
If this is it
I want to know the row
If this ain't love baby, just say so

P.S. (If you got through all those lyrics) I got my driver's license yesterday. Yay me!

Dribble

Unbeknownst to me, the weather has skipped ahead a few months and it is now spring. We just completely skipped over winter. Sure there were some day of winter, real honest to god winter, but now it's spring. Unless of course you talking about my feet, in which case it's still winter. Brrrr.
As a sort of present to himself, my Dad got a recumbent stationary bike at the beginning of this year. This is nice for both myself and Dad because we both like biking over any other form of exercise. Granted I only have four more days to enjoy the family bike before I go back to school and start using their recumbents. Hopefully the TVs at school will be entertaining as Monty Python or this whole exercise thing will be completely fucked and left for dead. We'll see.
So I'm finally taking my driver's test tomorrow and I cooked a pork roast this afternoon. I feel truly accomplished. Also I got my NME wall calender for 2008 and currently have Oasis staring me in the face. Well not directly at my face, but they're there, which is none to pleasing. I've decided to just completely ignore the month of June though (Pete Doherty), though I'm quite pleased with May (Arctic Monkeys.) Otherwise it's a good calender.
I would just like all of you to know that this entry took me a whole day to write. Just shows how busy(lazy) I am.

5.1.08

Blaaaaaaah

You can tell I'm bored when I update this thing multiple days in a row. Either that or...no just bored.
So I've actually got some exciting news, which means that not only am I bored, but have news to write about. Huzzah!
So that exciting news. Remember way back when, when I was going on and on about a band called OK Go? Well, I finally get to see them this February and unlike with the Cribs and the White Rabbits who refuse to have shows at times convenient for moi, OK Go will be playing on a Saturday at the 9:30 club. If I weren't so bored, grumpy and sleepy at the moment I would incredibly excited. I'll probably be really excited during the week of Jan. 28 (show is Feb. 2). As I hinted at before this is the first time I'll be getting to see OK Go so it's really quite exciting and, to quote the site, is "a benefit for Al “Carnival Time” Johnson and Sweet Home New Orleans." Good times, good times.
The Redskins are currently losing to the Seattle Seahawks. I'm not surprised, but I also don't care. So I'll be off now.

4.1.08

The Year That Was

I know it's the fourth day of 2008 and that really I should looking ahead to what might happen this year, but I've got these articles from last year about last year, so I really think I should post them. Only a couple have to do with music and the other two are about movies, though really it's more about certain entries, but I digress. There's one about beards too.
In order to combine both the articles I saved and my own opinions, I'm going to do this by category. Simple enough since there are only two categories to be looked at, but let's start with movies, the non-obvious choice.

Movies
I've never been a big fan of movies and most of the time I see them well after their initial release and sometimes many, many, many years after they debuted on the big screen. This year was no exception in my movie going patterns, except for the fact that I saw more movies while they were in theaters. Most of them weren't that good though, so I don't really remember them that well. Saw a couple through UMW's film club (Cheap Seats) though I think they were all within the same year of release. My basic criteria though is that the movie must make me feel something beyond slightly entertained for most of the film's duration. Which means that despite the number of movies I've seen throughout my life only a few could ever be considered "favourites." Somehow though I saw two movies that were released in 2007 that hit the mark. So without further ado, here are my top two movies for the 2007:
  1. Once (I know, such a shock.)
  2. Juno (Sophs really wanted to see this and I was willing to give it a chance. I almost cried.)

Now, for the other lists. The AV Club did an extensive look at the films released in 2007 and the Master List of best movies made me quite happy. Even though I only saw one of the movies on the list, I had heard about almost all of the movies and wasn't that surprised by the outcome. Except for the one I saw. :rolls eyes: What can I say, I have low expectations for the things I really like.
The other list I would like to highlight was written by Nathan Rabin who is my favourite critic over at AV Club and who also knows how to make a girl happy. You see, he placed Once at number one on his list. Meanwhile Noel Murray placed Once at number five and gave best performance to Glen Hansard. At this point I would just like to point out that all of the critics placed Once in their top 10. This is why I like the AV Club.

Music
When I listen to music I tend to forget what year it was released. I know vaguely when things were released, but sometimes, because of the difference between British and American release dates, I forget which year an album was released. 2006 or 2007? I was listening to it in 2006, does that mean that's when it was released? Not always, but again, it's hard to tell. The thing to keep in mind though, is that I know when Kaiser Chiefs released Yours Truly, Angry Mob, how much more can you expect from me? So onto my top 10 for 2007. (I'm doing it unnumbered so that I don't have to pick a number 1. Basically, I'm just going to be listing the albums I bought this year.)
  • Version --- Mark Ronson (featuring various artists including Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, and Maximo Park)
  • Yours Truly, Angry Mob --- Kaiser Chiefs
  • Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever --- The Cribs
  • Back to Black --- Amy Winehouse
  • Fort Nightly --- The White Rabbits
  • Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga --- Spoon
  • Costello Music --- The Fratellis
  • Alright, Still --- Lily Allen
  • Favourite Worst Nightmare --- Arctic Monkeys
  • Under the Blacklight --- Rilo Kiley
Understandably, most of my picks weren't on anyone else's lists. Drowned in Sound only featured two of my picks (the Cribs and Arctic Monkeys) on their top 50 and neither even made it into the top 25. Meanwhile over at Fake DIY only two made it into their top 20 (same two) while a vast majority of their other picks were either not released in the States in 2007 or are generally not to my taste. I guess you could say I'm just too mainstream. Or lazy, I can't decide.
Else where in the music world, the AV Club decided to ignore the "Best of" format and instead published a list of The Least Essential Albums of 2007. Included on the list are various sub-categories including "Least Essential Souvenir From A Benefit-Concert Sequel That No One Seemed All That Jazzed About To Begin With," "Least Essential Album By An Actor," "Least Essential Musical Necrophilia," and of course "Least Essential Album Of 2007." A much more fun list for me because I could say "I don't own any of these, thank God."

Beards
With the departure of Michael Tapper from We Are Scientists, Fake DIY's Beard of the Year contest seemed almost pointless. I mean, who cares if other people have beards? It doesn't matter if it's not Tapper. (Yes, that rhymed, but it wasn't intentional.) Unfortunately the contest wasn't called off and someone else won. Who is that someone else? Someone from Les Savy Fav. I've heard of them but I've never really listened to their music to be perfectly honest. So, there you have it: Someone other than Tapper won this year and I no longer give a shit.
Well that's it. Let's hope 2008 is almost, if not better, than 2007.

I've decided something. After listening to Sound of Silver by LCD Soundsystem, I've decided that if Fake DIY says I should listen to something, I should do as they say. My reasoning is that Sound of Silver is in fact brilliant and Fake DIY and I seem to be on the same wave length when it comes to music so I should do as they say. I'm sure I've made this comment before, but as my New Year's resolution I'm actually going to follow through on listening to new music suggested by Fake DIY. Besides they're getting a US branch which will make my life slightly easier (US releases and all that jazz).
On a related side note, James Murphy aka LCD Soundsystem, somehow makes seven minutes not seem like seven minutes. Usually I can tell when a track is longer than four minutes, but not so with LCD Soundsystem. I actually thought a track that was around three minutes was actually much longer than it was and a track that was only seven minutes much shorter than it is. In my opinion, that is brilliance.
I may or may not do my top X lists for 2007. I'll probably post some of my favourites (including Fake DIY's top 20 list) with comments, but there's a good chance I won't post my own because, well you all know how lazy I am. Besides you can all guess my number one (it starts with a "y" and ends with a "b") and then everything else is just fairly random and trying to remember whether it was actually released in 2007. All of that will be in another entry though, so no worries.
Now onto something completely different.
I finally got a chance to watch Amy Winehouse's first time on NMTB and not only was the episode quite delightful, but it was really amusing to see Amy not drunk. Well not amusing, more like amazing. I don't know...I guess you have to watch the episode yourself. So go forth and search my friends!
